Why You Want Epsom Salts In Your Fitness Routine

Updated: Oct 2

Looking for a way to ease the aches and pains from today's workout? Looking for a holistic approach to your post workout recovery? Maybe it's time to take a closer look at Epsom Salts!

It's been several years now since I was first introduced to epsom salts and I added them to my fitness routine. I work hard and I play hard. I can wind up with mystery bruises and my HIIT workouts can leave me with some muscle soreness at the end of a long day. And epsom salts have been a game changer.

There's nothing quite like soaking in a nice hot bath at the end of the day to soothe tight muscles, boost circulation, and sneak in a bit of dedicated "me time." Toss in some epsom salts, and you have a bath loaded with health and wellness benefits!

Epsom Salts

Health Benefits of Epsom Salts:

  • Improve healthy circulation

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Help alleviate muscle cramps

  • Enhance nerve function and regulate electrolytes

  • Ease the effects of migraines

  • Naturally flush toxins

  • Replenish magnesium and sulfate levels

  • They are readily absorbed through the skin

Not sure where to start?

Soak in a warm bath

Epsom salts dissolve in water and are easily absorbed by the skin, making them a perfect companion to your bath time. The magnesium ions in epsom salts have been shown to relieve tension by promoting serotonin, helping to relax the body. Try adding 1- 2C of epsom salts to warm bath water and wash away the stress of the day. to help soothe aches and pains, reduce swelling, minimize bruising, and detoxify.

No really, take a bath

Need another reason to add salts to your bath water? Epsom salts have been shown to help soothe aches and pains, reduce swelling, minimize bruising, and detoxify the body. Adding 1 - 2C of epsom salts to your bath can reduce menstrual cramping, help regulate fluid in the body, support healthy circulation, decrease pain and inflammation from sprains and strains, and enhance healing.

Natural Body Rub

Use it as a natural all over exfoliant (yes even on your face!) Rub a handful gently over damp skin to soften rough skin and slough away dead skin cells. For a natural boost to your facial cleanse add 1/2 tsp to your cleansing cream.

Antibacterial and anti-fungal treatment

Epsom salts are a natural way to treat toenail fungus and athlete's foot. Treat your tootsies well by regularly soaking them in a bowl of warm water with 1/2 C epsom salts to help keep the germ bugs at bay while reducing any itching, burning and discomfort. And what a better way to soothe tired feet at the end of a long day.

Support Holistic Wellness

There are many many ways you can incorporate epsom salts into your health, wellness, and fitness routine. Not only are they great for enhancing the natural healing process, but they offer a holistic approach that supports mental, emotional, and spiritual health as well. How? By working with the body's natural resolves we reduce tension and promote feelings of wellness. The conscious act of incorporating regular mindful and meditative activity (such as baths) into your routine allows you to carve out important introspective "quiet time," which has been shown to improve overall health and well-being - fostering the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health connection. How wonderful to be able to do something good for your mind, body and spirit!

Take away - so why not draw yourself a bath or put your tootsies in a bowl to soak, you'll not only wash away the stress of the day but do a little something good for your health and wellness too! Invite the positive energy to surround you as you unplug, regroup, and recharge....ahhh serenity anyone?
