My Favorite Fitness Essentials for Women Over 40

There are thousands of fitness products online, and honestly...most of us don't need more stuff.

What we do need are products that make moving our bodies feel a little easier, more comfortable, and a lot more enjoyable.

These are the fitness essentials I genuinely use myself—pieces I've purchased (many more than once!) because they've stood the test of time and become part of my everyday routine.

One thing I've learned over the years is that when I feel comfortable, I'm much more likely to head out for a walk, get in a workout, or simply stay active throughout the day.

From my favorite workout clothes to a few simple recovery tools, these are the products I reach for again and again because they make movement feel a little easier—and that's exactly the kind of product I love recommending.

If I were starting over tomorrow, these are the fitness favorites I'd add back to my cart first.

wearing a cross body bag to hold all my essentials

1. Crossbody Belt Bag

This little bag goes with me every single day.

Whether I'm walking the dog, heading out for errands, or traveling, it keeps everything I need within easy reach without weighing me down. I can fit my phone, lip balm, sunglasses, keys, and even dog bags inside, leaving my hands free while I'm out walking.

It's one of those simple purchases that makes getting out the door just a little easier and organized — and sometimes that's all it takes to stay consistent with daily movement.

2. CRZ Yoga Athleisure Wear

If you've followed me for any length of time, you've probably seen me wearing CRZ Yoga more than once.

Their tanks, leggings, shorts, and pullovers have become some of my favorite workout and everyday pieces. They're comfortable, flattering, and perform incredibly well whether I'm strength training, taking the dog for a walk, running errands, or traveling.

Many people compare them to Lululemon — and while I've owned pieces from both brands, I've been genuinely impressed with the quality of CRZ Yoga at such a budget-friendly price.

These have become wardrobe staples that I reach for week after week.

benefits of wearing a weighted vest

3. Weighted Vest

One of my favorite ways to make my walks a little more challenging is by adding a weighted vest.

It's an easy way to increase the intensity of a walk without having to spend more time exercising. As we move through midlife, maintaining muscle and supporting bone health become increasingly important, and adding resistance to activities you're already doing can be a simple way to build on those benefits.

I personally use a 12-pound weighted vest, which feels like the perfect balance for me. If you're new to weighted walking, I'd recommend starting with a lighter weight and gradually increasing as your body adapts.

One thing I always remind women: you don't need to wear a weighted vest on every walk—and you shouldn't. I like to think of it as another tool in my wellness toolbox. Wearing it a few days a week is plenty to enjoy the benefits while giving your body time to recover. Consistency will always beat doing the most.

4. Contigo Cortland Chill 2.0 Stainless Steel Water Bottle

If you've followed me for a while, you've probably noticed this water bottle showing up in some of my photos and Reels — and that's because I genuinely use it every single day.

Hydration is one of the simplest habits we can focus on for our health, but it's also one of the easiest to forget. Having a water bottle I actually like using makes it much more likely that I'll keep it filled and within reach throughout the day.

I've tried other popular water bottles over the years, but I always come back to this one. It's leakproof, keeps my water cold for hours, fits in my vehicle's cup holder, and the one-handed AUTOSEAL lid makes it incredibly convenient whether I'm walking the dog, heading to the gym, or running errands.

It's one of those everyday items that quietly supports a healthy habit without requiring extra effort — and sometimes those are the products that make the biggest difference.

If you're looking for a durable, practical water bottle that you'll actually want to carry with you, this is hands down my favorite and the one I recommend again and again.

5. A Fitness Tracker

One of the most eye-opening tools I've ever used isn't a piece of workout equipment, it's my fitness tracker.

Whether you choose an Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, or another activity tracker, having a better understanding of how much you're actually moving throughout the day can be incredibly eye opening.

I personally wear an Apple Watch every day because I like having my activity, workouts, heart rate, and notifications all in one place. It's become part of my daily routine.

That said, several of my clients use Fitbit or Garmin devices and absolutely love them. If you're already part of one of those ecosystems — or simply prefer their slimmer design — they're excellent options, too. The best fitness tracker is the one you'll enjoy and wear consistently.

One thing I've noticed over the years, both personally and while coaching clients, is that many women are surprised by how little they're moving during a typical workday. A fitness tracker brings awareness to those daily habits and often encourages small changes, like taking an extra walk, getting up more often, or aiming for a few more steps.

You don't have to obsess over the numbers, but having that information can be incredibly helpful. After all, you don't know what you don't know.

mini loop resistance bands for mobility, strength, and overall fitness training

6. Perform Better Mini Resistance Bands

If I could recommend just one inexpensive piece of fitness equipment for women over 40, resistance bands would be near the top of the list.

I've used these exact Perform Better Mini Bands for years, not only in my own workouts, but also with clients in my fitness studio and during rehabilitation exercises in physical therapy settings. They're incredibly versatile and one of the simplest ways to build strength, improve mobility, and activate muscles before a workout.

One of the things I love most is that they allow you to strengthen both stronger and weaker muscles at the same time, helping improve stability and movement patterns without putting unnecessary stress on your joints. That makes them a fantastic option for beginners, seasoned exercisers, and anyone returning from an injury.

They're also incredibly lightweight and compact. I toss mine into my suitcase whenever I travel, making it easy to fit in a quick workout or mobility session no matter where I am.

For such a small piece of equipment, they offer an incredible amount of versatility — and they're one of the best fitness investments I've ever made.

compact set of dumbbells with rack perfect for small spaces and supporting muscle in midlife

7. CAP Rubber-Coated Hex Dumbbell Set

If there's one piece of fitness equipment I recommend to almost every woman over 40, it's a good set of dumbbells.

Strength training becomes increasingly important as we move through perimenopause and menopause. Building and maintaining muscle supports our metabolism, bone health, balance, and helps us stay strong for everyday life.

I love this set because it gives me several weight options without taking up much space. The included storage rack keeps everything organized, off the floor, and tucked neatly into the corner of my workout room — a huge plus if you're working with a smaller space like I am.

The rubber-coated hex design is durable, protects my floors, and keeps the weights from rolling around. Whether I'm doing squats, presses, rows, lunges, or upper-body exercises, these dumbbells are the ones I reach for most often.

You don't need a home gym full of equipment to build strength. A quality set of dumbbells can take you surprisingly far — and it's one of the best investments you can make in your long-term health.

Giam yoga mat for stretching, workouts and foam rolling in midlife

8. Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat

A good yoga mat is one of those fitness essentials that you'll use for so much more than yoga.

Whether I'm strength training at home, stretching after a walk, working on mobility, or using my foam roller, having a comfortable, non-slip surface makes the whole experience more enjoyable.

I chose this Gaiam mat because it's a little thicker than many standard mats, which makes it much more comfortable for exercises on my knees, hips, and back. It has held up beautifully over the years and still looks great despite regular use.

One thing I love most is its versatility. You don't have to practice yoga to get plenty of use out of it. It's simply a comfortable space to move your body, whether you're lifting weights, stretching, or taking a few minutes to improve your mobility.

Sometimes the best fitness equipment isn't the most complicated—it's the piece you'll actually roll out and use.

foam roller for reducing aches and pains and keeping your body moving well

9. Foam Roller

I've always been a believer in taking care of my body. Massage therapy, craniosacral therapy, and pressure point work can all be incredibly beneficial — but they can also add up quickly.

That's one of the reasons I love my foam roller so much. It's a budget-friendly tool that delivers surprisingly luxurious results when you use it consistently.

Whether I've finished a strength workout, spent the afternoon gardening, taken a long walk, with the dog or simply sat at my computer for way too long, a few minutes with my foam roller helps release tension in my upper back, shoulders, hips, and legs.

It's not a replacement for professional bodywork, but it is one of the simplest (and most affordable) ways I've found to help my body recover and feel its best between appointments.

Final Thoughts

If you've been around here for a while, you know I'm all about keeping fitness simple, and fun. While none of these products are "must-haves," they've each earned a permanent place in my routine because they help remove little obstacles that can make staying active feel harder than it needs to be.

Whether it's making strength training feel more convenient, getting outside for a walk, staying hydrated throughout the day, or taking a few minutes to stretch and recover, these are products I genuinely use day after day — and would happily buy again tomorrow.

I hope you found a few new favorites to inspire and motivate your fitness goals and make movement feel a little easier and more enjoyable. Because when fitness fits your real life, it's so much easier to stay consistent, and that's what drives results.
